The Queen of Versailles at St James Theatre

Based on the acclaimed documentary directed by award winning filmmaker Lauren Greenfield, The Queen of Versailles is a musical which follows the extravagant journey of Jakie Siegel, a former Mrs. Florida turned Billionairess and the wife of David “The Timeshare King” Siegel, played by Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth and the legendary F. Murray Abraham. The mother of eight children embodies the American Dream of building a private home like no other – the Versailles House – one of the largest homes in America estimated at a $100 Million price tag. However, the 2008 financial crisis brings in a new challenge and limitations not only for the building itself, but also the family.

The Production

The Queen of Versailles is a new musical, featuring scores by the Academy Award winning songwriter Stephen Schwartz, Tony Award winning director Michael Arden, choreographed by the talented dance couple Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant, and the book for the musical written by Lindsey Ferrentino. The show is produced by Bill Damaschke, Seaview, Sonia Friedman and leading star Kristin Chenoweth.

The Queen of Versailles comes to Broadway after its residency at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre. The musical is set to run from November 10th, with first preview set for October 8th, at the St. James Theatre, New York City.

The Musical

The Queen of Versailles, starring Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth and F. Murray Abraham as billionaire-couple Jackie and David Siegel, is an adaptation of the 2012 documentary of the same title. The documentary was directed by critically acclaimed and award winning filmmaker Lauren Greenfield, which documents Jackie Siegel and her husband David Siegel building an ambitious private home, set to be the largest state in Orlando and America. Jackie Siegel’s American dream and $100 million project faces a major setback due to the 2008 recession. 

The Queen of Versailles’ musical features a book by Lindsey Ferrentino, which is the musical adaptation of the original documentary and explores the reality of fame, fortune, and family. The broadway show highlights the success of Jackie Siegel, a computer engineer who went to become Mrs. Florida and later the wife of the billionaire David “The Timeshare King” Siegel and mother to eight children. With the great recession of 2008, the play highlights its crumbling effect on the couple’s dreams and their lavish and glamorous lifestyle. 

The musical’s production credit is just as glitzy as Siegel’s lifestyle. Directed by Tony Awards winner Michael Arden, scores and music by the legendary and Academy Awards winning songwriter Stephen Schwarts, and produced by the leading star Chenoweth, Bill Damaschke, Seaview, and Sonia Friedman. The show is a reunion for Chenoweth and its songwriter Stephen Schwartz. The two are coming together for the first time since their previous Broadway show, “Wicked”, which premiered in 2003. No musical is complete without the dazzling choreography and who better than the iconic duo Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant to spice up the dance moves on the stage. 

What to Expect

With the enriched documented history of the Vesailles House, the musical brings the screen experience onto stage. Every sit-in interview is brought to life with the view of what it can be described as behind the scenes. While Jackie is looking glamorous on her throne, beyond that the crew documenting the family and the constructions can be seen surrounding the family’s troubles. From scaffoldings and builders, to camera crew and their equipment, the play brings home the reality behind what it takes to build a $100 million dream. The Queen of Versailles doesn’t shy away from keeping the show authentic to its roots. The costumes, wigs, and interior are all nods to the documentary and the family. 

Spectators are invited into Jackie Seigel’s dream and witness the rise and fall and all that’s in between. It’s an emotional ride for the family on stage and the audience seated and they see the building unravel as well as the family’s finances and relationships. With the award winning production team, the musical is set to be of the highest standards and utmost entertaining.
