Titanique – Musical at St James Theatre

Titanique at St James TheatreFrom a basement Off-Broadway to a global smash hit, TITANÍQUE is sailing onto Broadway for a grand voyage at the notorious St James Theatre. This international phenomenon is the winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The play reimagines Jack and Rose’s timeless love on a dreamy ship. The tale is told through the French-Canadian eyes of an icon who was there: Céline Dion (not the real Céline — but she would definitely approve!). The legendary singer remembers the tragic romance with even more shocking twists, mega-diva shenanigans, and amazing vocals of the star’s top songs – and not even an iceberg can slow her down. This is a kooky krazy musical extravaganza that will never let go. Don’t miss out Titanique – Musical at St James Theatre – book your tickets now!

Synopsis

The story sets sail in a contemporary Titanic museum where an infamous Céline Dion disrupts a tour group. The star claims she was actually on the ship and recounts her version of the doomed romance between Jack and Rose, complete with other iconic Titanic characters. The tale unfolds with several parodies and mashups of Céline Dion’s biggest songs. She transforms the classic story into a spectacle of celebration. Expect this unique musical voyage to be a fast-paced, absurd, and heartwarming comedy. It’s bursting with pop culture jokes and high octane vocals.

What’s more, Broadway credits include the original casts of Sister Act (Sister Mary Robert) and Cinderella (Stepsister Gabrielle), as well as South Pacific. Marla Mindelle’s national tour credits include The Drowsy Chaperone (Kitty). On screen, the star plays resident Olivia in the Emmy-nominated Netflix series “Special” and is starring in the upcoming movie, I Play Rocky.

Jim Parsons is playing Ruth DeWitt Bukater. He is an Emmy and Golden Globe winner who most recently starred in the Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. Meanwhile, Deborah Cox is playing Unsinkable Molly Brown. She is a Grammy-nominated recording artist, Broadway performer, and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee. Frankie Grande steps into the role of Victor Garber/Luigi. He is a multihyphenate performer, producer, and host. The star has starred on Broadway in Mamma Mia! and Rock of Ages. He has also produced award-winning theater and movies, and starred in top television shows including “Big Brother” and “Henry Danger.” Constantine Rousouli is reprising his star-making role as Jack Dawson.

Review

“There’s a riff, a joke, or a pop-culture reference as punctuation in just about every line, and the cast delights in knowing they’re about to get us roaring. The production is one big wink-nudge combo. It’s almost unfathomable that something so frothy, deeply referential and stubbornly stupid (that’s a compliment) could have such legitimate success. The show is built on a parody-musical playbook and the premise, I cannot stress enough, is that legendary singer Celine Dion was aboard the Titanic in 1912 and pops up in a Titanic museum to tell us the “real story”. It references a dizzying array of pop culture deep cuts as it re-tells and re-mixes the 1997 film from love story to character actor cameos and beyond into disaster (Rose wears that fateful door like a backpack). When the performance ended, I overheard a woman in the bathroom line say to her companion, “I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that much in my entire life.” She said it with a hint of wonder. In that same line, someone else said, “Wasn’t that the funniest thing you’ve ever seen?” What a gift to leave us: being a little in awe of your own capacity for merriment.”  – The Guardian
