Set in the artistic period during the end of the 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily based on French history. The play can be found in and is centered around the events of an actual nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, called the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the late 1900s, Moulin Rouge became well-known for its French Cabaret elegance – lively, loose, and pure party entertainment. This Parisian nightclub that the staging was based on also influenced the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the musical's team saying that they did directly borrow from the actual Bohemian history, and it can undoubtedly be seen in the production. The set, clothing, classical renditions, and song and dance numbers (which features a lot of can-can dance) all obviously show reverence and respect to the film version of Moulin Rouge.
It is in this period of history leading up to the 1900s and right in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a duration pointed to as the height of beauty and spreading artistry, where the fictional tale of two lovers finally begins. Christian, an American writer who travels to France aiming for a successful calling, meets Satine, the greatest entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine, despite the imminent danger of their relationship, fall deeply in love and have to be a concealed affair with each other caused by their lack of standing and power.
Contrary to other accounts, the duration of La Belle Époque was criticized by historians not as a time period of advancement or development. Many are of the opinion that these years were all about overindulgence and abuse of the rich. the Broadway play, however, chose to capture the time period in a more positive light by focusing on the good Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s fight for love throughout the show.
This August, viewers and audiences have the opportunity to enjoy the passion most likely also loved by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing at an equally lively and unforgettable venue, Al Hirschfeld Theatre. With interior decor just as sprightly as the set design that it is holding, Al Hirschfeld Theatre is the best fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited showing on Friday 29th August 2025.
