Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Al Hirschfeld Theatre

Before its debut in 2019, Moulin Rouge! The Musical needed to take on the challenge of exceeding or at minimum being at equal footing with the original film of the same name. With overwhelmingly positive reviews, even critics know that Moulin Rouge in Broadway has ensured that it is here to stay with an impressive turnout each show from both original film and Broadway fans. Broadway World’s Miranda Keating even praised the production after watching, stating “Honestly, as as I entered the theatre, I was immediately immersed into the magical, beautiful world of the Moulin Rouge. When the final act concluded, I originally had nothing to say. Moulin Rouge's plot itself is a fresh retelling of the 2001 film about Christian and Satine, an American writer arrives in Paris to look for something to inspire him, and a performer in the Moulin Rouge nightclub, respectively. Christian and Satine enter into a forbidden love as they get to know each other, and it is in their entanglement that they endanger themselves because of a jealous benefactor, though their love for each other pushes them on.

In the duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes of the entire play, this tale is shared mainly through song, with second to none musical scoring from the production, which is a mixture of mash-ups, medleys, and even songs from the 2001 film. Manchester Media Group reported that the play is “an audio and visual masterpiece that translated beautifully on stage.” From the colorful opening number up to the last performance, the musical’s intensity is very evident; plus the fact that even the actors and actresses are composed of singer Broadway veterans like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo leading the title roles of Christian and Satine and you have a box office hit on your hands.
