Al Hirschfeld Theatre
In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was modified into the iconic musical adaptation in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by award-winning cast members such as Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music numbers and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation full of the triumph of love against odds that shows us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the height of Bohemianism, during the span of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his path to success. He aspires to set in motion a successful career as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new contacts, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to create a musical that they can put on. It is in the hidden world of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the star of the the renowned entertainment venue that he wishes to get to know more. Their developing love however encounters a difficult challenge in the persona of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in agreement for a large financial investment to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s tale of love and loss on the Broadway stage.
Fundamentally a classical story that remains a sure favorite in current times, Moulin Rouge is also a combination of both old and new music, putting together numbers not just from the Baz Luhrmann's original, but also performance mash-ups and arrangements from new songs that were interlaced into the narrative of the musical.
