Set in the Bohemian period during the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The musical can be found in and is centered around the happenings of an actual nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, called the Moulin Rouge, where the can-can dance was born. By the late 19th century, the Moulin Rouge nightclub became renowned for its French Cabaret elegance – lively, free-spirited, and pure party entertainment. This Parisian entertainment venue that the staging was created from also impacted the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the Broadway play's creators saying that they did take pieces of the actual French period, and it can decisively be witnessed in the show. The decor, clothing, music score, and choreography (which features a lot of can-can dance) all evidently are a clear inspiration from to the 2001 adaptation of Moulin Rouge.
It is in this period of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a time considered to be the peak of beauty and spreading artistry, where the forbidden affair of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who moves to Paris, France aiming for a successful calling, meets Satine, the best entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine, despite both external and internal challenges, fall deeply in love and have to be a secret relationship with each other caused by the Duke of Monroth's intervention.
Depending on perspective, the duration of La Belle Époque was denounced by historians not as a period of advancement or development. Historians believe that this decade were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. the Broadway play, however, chose to showcase the era in a more positive light by instead presenting the good Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as perceived through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the musical.
This August, locals and tourists have the chance to be part of the passion most likely also enjoyed by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing at an equally colorful and epic venue, Al Hirschfeld Theatre. With interior decor just as sprightly as the set that it is hosting, Al Hirschfeld Theatre is the best fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited production on Saturday 2nd August 2025.
